Catherine Spurr Walker, Q.C. (nee Gilliatt), whose family was from Annapolis Royal, grew up the youngest of three children to a Canadian Air Force pilot and officer and lived in many parts of Canada and abroad. Catherine graduated from Guelph University in 1974 with a history major followed by Dalhousie Law School where she graduated in the class of 1977.
Catherine articled in Halifax and New Glasgow, then settled into practice in Halifax with a small firm before heading out as a sole practitioner in 1979. Since that time, she has practiced primarily as a sole practitioner and received her Queen's Counsel designation in 1993.

Catherine's volunteer involvement has spanned many years with the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society and the Lawyers' Insurance Association of Nova Scotia.
A past President of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society (2007-08) she is currently the Nova Scotia representative on the Council of the Federation of Law Societies participating at the national level in matters of regulation of the practice of law.

 In 2004, she was awarded the Society's Distinguished Service Award for her volunteer activities. She has been involved with the Professional Standards Committee (Real Estate - Chair, member), Loss Prevention Committee (Chair, member), member of the Board of Directors of the Lawyers' Insurance Association, Real Estate Task Force (Chair), Service Nova Scotia Municipal Liaison Committee (Co-Chair, member), member of the Steering Committee of the Registry 2000 Initiative, responsible for development of the Land Registration Act, Education Trainer for the Society in Land Registration initiative, member at large on the Executive Committee 1992-94, and 2003-2005. Her legislative initiatives include involvement with the Marketable Titles Act, and the Land Registration Act.

In a volunteer capacity, she has been involved in continuing education as an organizer for over a decade of provincial property conferences for the real estate bar, Chair of the CBA Real Estate Section (Nova Scotia Branch), Director and one of the founding members of the Real Estate Lawyers' Association (RELANS).
